I think we need candidates like Paul Hackett. It's unfortunate that many of the Democratic front runners are trying to bridge the gap instead of come out swinging. Hillary scares the shit out of me because I don't think she has a snowball's chance in hell. The same goes for Obama, he's too new and too inexperienced and really has been trying to toe the line. I think someone like Wesley Clark would be ideal if he could harden his stance and take a few lines from Murtha's book. I guess we will see.

Go Russ! As a Wisconsin resident, I've followed Feingold for a long time. He has the right stuff. Whether or not any sitting senator can take the White House is the question that plagues his chances most.

Though I come from a blue collar family with a strong foundation in workers rights, I would politely ask you to consider John McCain as our next and future President. I have followed John McCain's career ever since Bush beat him out for the nomination for 2000. As a Navy veteran I have a personal admiration for the man. As a free thinking, patriotic American I am impressed with his actions in the US Congress. On many occasions I have openly and loudly exclaimed, "Thank God for John McCain!"

Please follow the link and scroll down to John McCain's essay. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4538138

Many months ago I happened to be watching The Daily Show with John Stewart. His guest that night was Joeseph Biden. John, in his usual insightful way, asked Senator Biden about the next Presidential election. One of the things Sen. Biden said is that he would consider running as VP with John McCain! I was blown away and at the same time I had an "A-ha!" moment. It would be an unbeatable team. A third party lead by John McCain and Joeseph Biden would break open the cesspool of corruption the Congress has become. I won't go into Tom Delay or Jack Abramhoff, but I think it is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

John McCain forever lost my respect when he endorsed George W. Bush for president in 2004. The Bush team ran a _deplorable_ campaign against McCain in the runup to the South Carolina primary in 2000. I'm talking push polling to suggest that McCain fathered an illigetimate black baby (in fact he'd adopted a Cambodian child), getting a corrupt veterans organization to question McCain's sanity as a result of his heroic stay in the Hanoi Hilton, and basically sliming him worse than any politician has been slimed in recent memory.

How did McCain respond? Why, by acting as the chairman of Arizona's "Reelect President Bush" campaign in 2004, speaking for him at the convention or on the stump, and basically acting like a spineless schmuck.

He completely lost me forever with that response. Instead of struggling for the heart of the Republican party he gave in to darkness and forever lost my respect.

Washington needs fighters, not business-as-usual assholes who pretend to be fighters. Bush and his cronies are part of the systemic illness that has infested our government forever, and anyone who wraps himself in those diseased garments deserves neither my respect nor my vote.

Well... I agree that it was a terrible incident of politics/business as usual with the reelction in '04. But (and a big but) is how over whelmingly the neocons policy took over the Republican party. Until '05 I was concerned that we Americans had been co-opted by a shadow government for the Heritage Foundation. John McCain may still be a politician, but that is a skill/proffession that requires long term planning and positioning, as well as waiting for the correct "climate." I am not a Republican, I am a fiscally conservative radical moderate. Though I am impressed with the Hackett article (I heard of him briefly due to proximity to Cinci) and think he is a true patriot, he's to much of a long shot for '08. I understand your disappointment in John McCain. I too wished he had fought harder against Bush back in '99, but how can we expect an honest man to win against an orginazation that has so much influence that they were able to STEAL the 2000 election. I lived in Dade county then. I voted for Ralph Nader becuase I wanted to bust the two party system. Oh woe is me! I can only say is that I don't see anyone more qualified to deal with our current state of affairs.

"His rhetoric was scorched-earth: 'I don’t like the sonofabitch that lives in the White House,' he told USA Today, 'but I’d put my life on the line for him.'"

Huh?

Paul Hackett is talking about his oath when he joined the Marines. To fight for his country and obey orders given by the President of the United States.

Okay that isn't the real oath but it is pretty amusing.
