Headlines are Hard

As a person with a relationship with the company and as a former public relations professional, I'm really in no position to sink my teeth deep into this little bit of news, but I have to wonder if there is a better way of saying "we just fired 15 good people" than "Company Makes Staff Changes to Stay Adaptable to Changing Trends in Marketplace."

Given that this is the internet talking, thank heavens for small mercies that the headline didn't say any one of the following:

"OMG Magic Kills D&D"

"OMG 4th Edition is at Hand!"

It's even better if the article goes on to give shocked Wizards employees' responses to the news:

"wtf l4mz0r!!!!1!!!!11" exclaimed one totally pwned ex-staffer.

"wE gIV3 r l337 sk1llz 2 th1s c0mp now you b00t us you all suck lyk camprz" said another before being hit by a train of mobs. Rezzing services to be held this afternoon.

On a serious note, there were some truly great people listed there. I still remember Charles Ryan babysitting all us idiots on the forums during thew long months before D20 Modern's release. They must have gotten cyborg game-bots from the future to replace them, brecause anything less is an outrage.

Wow, Merry $*&%#in' Christmas.

Why do big companies always fire people this time of year?

It doesn't make much sense. I worked in the non-profit world for about 6 years as a program manager before I moved to Texas and became a waiter. Our rounds of firing always occured in June, around the end of the fiscal year, as we hammered out next year's budget. A round of downsizing a month before Christmas says (to me) that there's been some poor planning afoot.

In my fomer company, we lost about a third of our already shrinking Annual Fund after Sept. 11th, and a few large reliables pulled out for good measure. My program was on the chopping block twice before we could figure out how to keep it. Yes, the firings were tough, but at least in our company there was a real effort to save as many jobs as we could. Plus, the empoyees were kept abreast of everything that was happening at all times.

Ironically, I now have all the job security in the world. No matter what happens to the economy, there will always be rich people who need their silverware polished.

Yeah me.

Anyway, I sincerely hope those poor guys and gals can find work in a field that they still love. Merry ^%#$^ing Christmas indeed.
