Young Man

Yesterday I hit the iTunes music store to pick up some songs that frequently end up stuck in my head even though I don't own them and only hear them on the radio or in movies. This led to picking up Neil Young's beautiful song "Old Man," which I've always really liked.
But that's about the end of the road for me when it comes to Neil Young—not for any good reason, but there you have it. I simply haven't had a chance to explore his work as much as I might like, but now that I've started I may as well go further. I really, really like this song, and imagine that Young has plenty of others that are just as good.
I just don't know where to start.
A while back, I posted about discovering the Beatles, and asked for some suggestions for which songs I might want to check out. The response was really helpful, and led to the discovery of some great music (I fell asleep to Revolver last night, for example).
So, anyone have any Neil Young suggestions?

"Keep on Rockin' In the Free World." Can't beat it with a spiked hammer.
"Southern Man", "Heart of Gold", "The Painter", "Cinnamon Girl" are probably essentials. I probably like "Heart of Gold" better than "Old Man".
"It's a Dream", "Down by the River", "This Old Guitar", and "Prairie Wind" are also very good.
Then of course there is Crosby, Stills, Nash when Young was still with them, some pretty good stuff on Deja Vu and So Far.
The Needle and the Damage Done. Ohio.
I suppose you might pick up Decade, or even just Harvest.
I mean if you like that commie hippy shit.
YOU fell asleep to Revolver last night?
Should be WE. ;P
Passed out is more like it.
Heh.
When she's right, she's right.
James D's suggestion to pick up "Decade" is a good one. It's a two disc collection of many of his best songs. As far as other albums, I think "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" is one of hisbest, but it's got a few long tracks and a lot of moody guitar in it. "Harvest Moon" is also a favorite of mine, and track 4 (the title track) is going to be played at my wedding next year. It's soft and a little bit country, but I think it sounds great.
I would also avoid his lastest couple of albums, especially the most recent releases.
I just saw Neil young on Conan tonight. He performed something new i guess. it had a country twang to it, as did his dress. I'd stick with the classics.
"Heart of Gold" is one of his finest. "Southern Man" is good, but kind of heavy-handed. "Harvest Moon", a more recent track, has always been a favorite for me.
And "Keep on Rocking in the Free World" IS a great listen.
Live Rust
Neil Young and Crazy Horse live is sonic power!
"Like a Hurricane"
"Cortez the Killer"
Arc Weld has one disc that is pure feedback!
Fresh Air had a recent rebroadcast of an interview with Neil. Fascinating. Maybe at NPR.org or Audible.com.

Not totally related but I was grocrey shopping last night and they were playing Jim Croce on the PA system. It reminded me of you and driving the Hana highway in a convertable. "Isn't that the way they say it goes..."

Don't be afraid of the newer stuff... I think that Silver and Gold is some great music.
One of my all time top-5 songs is by Neil Diamond, er, Young: Unknown Legend. Great tune.
Check out the albums 'Harvest' and 'After The Gold Rush'. Pretty much any song on those records is gold.
I particularly like 'Alabama', 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' & 'The Needle & The Damage Done'.
I always liked falling asleep to the Soundtrack to the movie Deadman. Really nice guitarwork by Mr Young
