Another Ancient Culture of Oerth

This one's from a fairly obscure source, "Ex Keraptis Cum Amore," an adventure by Andy Miller published in Dungeon #77 (November/December 1999).

"Long a scholar of an ancient race called the Torhoon (whose empire, based on alchemy and magic, was centered in Hepmonaland over 8,000 years ago), the mad lich crafted his dungeon on their writings and style. He strove to make the dungeon seem authentically ancient, going so far as to use the ancient Torhoon language in his riddles and fill the place with Torhoon artifacts of his own. In his insanity, he soon came to believe that the dungeon was an ancient Torhoon site, and that he was the sole preserver of the Torhoon legacy."

There might be a few more details in the adventure (they have "serpentine writing," for example), but I'll have to give it a more thorough study later. I've added the Torhoon (and a few other ancient kingdoms) to the table a few posts below.

Yeah i'm glad you caught Torhoon. I wonder if that could be married to SKR's Hepmonaland sources easily? Also, how about the Rujari? I can't recall where I heard that one but I think it was in some writing you or Holian did.

"Scarlet Brotherhood" is sure to offer up a handful of new pre-historic cultures, so I've been putting off a thorough review until I have more time for it. I want to get a general sense of what we're dealing with in the Flanaess before I move on to the Amedio and Hepmonaland.

Given that the culture is so ancient, it might not be all that hard to fit in. I seem to remember that the matriarchy on the southern tip of Hepmonaland goes back thousands of years, so there may be some possibilities there.

"Rujari," incidentally, is my name for the primitive humans (think non-Homo Sapiens) who were around before the rise of the Flan, and who still exist in very small numbers in remote mountain caves. I don't think they've made their way into the "official" Greyhawk, but I will attempt to fit them into this current project.

So the Rujari are like Flores Man perhaps?

More like Neanderthals, but you get the idea.

Erik---

Robert Wiese's seven-round tourney "Finger of the Wind" (run at GenCon AD&D Open in 2000) has a fair amount of info in it about the Wind Dukes of Aaqa, and may also have info about the Cairn Builders IIRC. It's been awhile since I read it, so the specifics aren't fresh in my mind.

Come of think of it, R7-10 also have info about the Wind Dukes in them.
